Hey guys, I'm currently looking at a '54 Chevy Bel-Air. The stovebolt is cool, but I'd rather have a newer engine with more compression, power, torque, etc. I'm curious how hard it would be to swap one of the newer 292ci 6's into this car. Would it be a cut-and-weld job, or is there any way I could easily make up some sort of adapter bracket?

Best thing to do is give Buffalo Ent. a call (add running on home page), he's the guru with trick brackets, kits etc. I stuffed a 292 into my 48 Fleetline some years back, actually found side motor mounts kits for bolt in or weld in. I think Langdon's Stovebolt has this stuff also.
Best of luck.

Thanks! I checked Langdons and they have them listed, looks like it'll take a 250 or 292.

back in the '70s, i rode in a '53 chevy wagon that had a mildly built 292 with a 4-speed from a chevelle. that was a sweet setup and a very snappy performer. the guy fabricated his own mounts and said there was nothing complicated about the conversion. the original radiator cooled the 292 with no problems. this is a very practical conversion!

Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

I put a 250 in a 50 Chevy last year and made my on mounts. Very easy job. Hardest part was rebending the "3 on the tree" shifting rods. About 400 trips under and out of the car. When you are 70+ that gets to working on your old bones...SCRAP
