I have a 64 nova with a 230 engine, I want to change it out to a 250 engine. Now I have read a few comments about the tie rod rubbing the oil pan. My question is, do I modify the oil pan, or is there another kind of oil pan I can put on the 250 engine, or do I modify the tie rod? Please help.

The oil pan from your 230 will fit the 250 with no problems. They're both the same basic engine block, and the Nova oil pan will work fine on either the 230 or 250 motor.
Formerly known as 64NovaWagon.

62-67 194-230 Pans Are center sump pick-up. Were as the 250 oil pans are Rear Sump pick-up. And any Block that has a Rear sump pick-up Would need to be Drilled for the Dip stick Or the Tube would need to be welded to the Oil Pan. A piece or Round Bar/stock and a small hammer will make enough of a dimple in the pan where the drag link Just barely rubs the oil pan. I have done this On many and I have Never Rubed through a Oil pan yet. The drag Link Mainly touchs the oil pan at Max. Turning. I have been working on making some notched oil pans for the ChevyII body with 250s ( like the V8 pans) But have not had time to finish. and to make 100%sure everything clears. If you need a picture of the area That needs to be addressed Just Email me and I'll send you it.
NEVER make Mods to the Drag Link Or Tie rods.

Why was the 64 nova tie rod made like that? or were they all made like that? It does not make since that chevy would make this kind of design.

The Tie rod is NOT the issue It is the Drag Link There is a Big difference between the too. 62-67 Novas All had a center dump oil pan. 68 on up is when The chevyII/Nova went to a rear sump about mid 68 Is when Chevy also Stopped calling it a chevyII and went with the NOVA name.

Yes sir, my mistake, I did mean drag link. I do appreciate all the information you guys have given me on this situation. Is there any way, maybe by the ser# on the car what engine size came in the car?

being a 64 it would have had either the 194 Or a 230 Only nothing bigger. But you can check the # on the block.

I went through this same problem when I put a 71 250 in a 62 Nova with a 66 194 in it. At first I used the center pump pan but could not check the oil properly. Dip stick location is different. Then I did as Larry suggested and put the 71 pan on and dippeled it. problem solved
