I've got 1954 261 just installed, have never heard it run yet. Backfires through the carburetor when I try to start it. I think the timing should be close, maybe not exact. New carburetor on it, so suggestions would be appreciated.

double check the dizzy installation. its possible you have the dizzy installed 180 degrees off.

Thanks for reply--found at least part of problem was open manifold vacumn line. Still checking this motor out--bought sight unseen, so not sure yet what I got (except oil leaks, for sure.)

I really appreciate this forum--always lots of help and good info.

I'll send pics of old Chev. if/when running soon...

If you are 100% sure that your not 180 off with the distributor and that your firing order is right and still will not start, Dont be afraid to twist the dist. an inch or so in either direction and try it each way.
