Can someone explain me what to do on breaking in my 261 with m4f cam, standard intake and exhaust(for now), .030 overbore and 848 head?

I allready learned that after priming the pump i should rev the engine up to 2000 rpm for the first 20 minutes (fast idle). But i still have questions after that.
When should i change the oil the first time, and what to do after the first 20 minutes?

Thanks

Dennis. \:\)

Dear Dennis;

Simply drive it conservately the first 2,000 miles using SAE 20 oil, SAE 30 after.

Change the oil after 500 miles then at 1,000. After that, every 2,000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first.

Don't use multi-grade oil (10-30) ever.

The SAE 30 used in diesel trucks works best, as it has the longest lasting detergent action and best flow rate.

You might go to a "truck stop" and see what brand they use.

Good luck. \:\)

i would tell you to add a jug of EOS. EOS engine oil supplement is available from your gm dealer. it has extra, heavy high pressure lubricant needed for cam breakin. i also backup what john said, but would breakin with 30 w oil. engines run hotter during breakin and they will need the viscosity. also as he says change oil at 500 miles. then drive conservative for a while before putting the hammer down. i just wished i could do that last part with my own projects.

On more tid bit, I always change the oil filter after the 20 min cam break-in. If its a spin on filter I change the filter then cut the can off using a panel ripper on the air hammer (makes a clean cut - no fillings) and inspect the filter material with a magnetic. The oil itself can stay in . I usually give the engine a couple of 3/4 throttle runs with cool down in between to seat the rings then drive lightly for 500 miles. Change the oil and filter then its good to go. With modern clyinder wall finishes and a moly ring they are pretty much seated after 500 miles.

Make sure all the cam lobes and bottoms of the lifters are coated generously with a good assembly lube prior to starting. By the end of the year Diesel oils will be modified too so look to GM EOS (1/2 bottle) with every change will continue to protecte the sheer action of a flat tappit cam and lifters...Good luck
