Hello, Inliners,

I've got to be putting some '40's/early '50's Dodge/Ply flat sixes together over the next couple of months.

I've been away from doing engines for a few years now, and my former parts suppliers are no more.

Can anyone recommend good suppliers for the usual sort of rebuild parts, pistons, rings, inserts, gaskets, etc.?

I'd always used F/M or Clevite inserts.....if I can't get those, what's the best choice, these days?

Likewise, the various other bits and pieces....are there any makes/suppliers to prefer, or to avoid, these days? Is there anyone who has good stock on F/M, Victor, etc., and isn't as 'pricey' as are some of the 'specialty suppliers'? ( e-mail me directly, on carla@tactical-link.com , if you would, please)

There's one detail I've been trying to remember, from years ago.....some of the Plymouth engines of the late '40's, early '50's sometime were the infamous 'soft crank specials'.....something about a change to a cast crank from forged, or some such. Can anyone give me the gen on that?

I'd wanted to find some 1957-'59 230's to build up , but haven't been able to.....so how close to the '57-'59 specs can I get using late '40's/early '50's blocks?

Does anyone remember what the differences between the early '50's 230's and the '57-59's, aside from the higher comp head and the manifolding? Was the cam timing different, and would a very mild regrind be worthwhile for an ordinary road engine?

cheers

Carla
