During a recent trip thru an older truck manual, I saw an oil filter adapter on a 292 engine that turned down 90 degrees so the filter was vertical not horizontal.Everytime I change my filter a huge mess occurs because oil runs down the block,then across the xmember to drivers side.Anyone know about these? If not,any ideas to stop this mess from happening?Ive tried putting rags,cardboard,etc,just makes it worse.
Thanks. Muley

Dear Mr. Muley;

Try Tom's Truck Parts, in Maimi, Ok.
Their number is: 918) 542-3871.

Good luck. \:\)

You can probably get that adapter directly from your local Chevy/GMC dealer. I have seen it used on various inline-6 and V-6 engines from the 60's and 70's. In fact my '67 GMC 3/4 ton pickup with 305 V-6 uses one.

No doubt if GM made a 90 degree adapter for these engines it will fit right. I would measure and double check any aftermarket adapter to be sure it will position the filter far enough off the face of the block to clear the big pan rail flange that is in the way. Changing the oil in these engines is a messy job. I have a piece of aluminum I bent up to slip under the filter and let the oil run down it to a pan and even then I lay rags on the crossmember. After all that there is still oil to clean off the bottom of the block.

Only one I ever saw that was worse was a V8 Nash that the filter screwed down onto the top of the engine. When Nash folded up shop that guy must have got a job at Chevy!
