Are the balancers on the chevy 250's and 292's interchangeable? My friend needs one for his 292 and I have one for a 250 that I'd give him but we don't know if it'll work. If not, are the 292 balancers interchangeable with anything else? I have a few for a smallblock. Thanks for any info. Ken

As long as the pulley grooves line up with your accessories, then any L6 balancer will work on another L6. They are different in snout length from a bent8, so can't be used there without some changes.

They may be interchangable but a 250 damper on a 292 is probably not a good idea. The much heavier 292 damper is there for a purpose, the usually harder working 292 has more vibes. But if you just putt around town, it will work ok.

A friend and I are running 250 dampers on our 292's. We have had the problem of them either coming apart or slipping on the hub. I bought a new one the other day to try and see if that makes any difference. Hope this helps.

There is a method of drilling and countersinking bolts into the balancer to keep the outer shell from walking off the inner hub. I've had to do it on almost every engine that I've built that was not COMPLETELY stock. Maybe it's my modifications, maybe something else is at work. Nonetheless, I learned the trick from others that were fighting the same battle with highly modified 292's and 250's on roundy-round tracks. Besides, the race rules require a method to retain the ring, and this works.
If anybody's interested in what can be done to fix the "walk", then let me know and I'll see if I can get some closeup photos of the one on my truck now.

Hi David, It's not your modifications that cause the problem. It's the fact that your modifications let you rev higher and the crankshaft gets some serious harmonic vibrations. Jim

I'm sure that drilling and countersinking bolts into the balancer is very effective at retaining the outer ring, but doesn't that negate most of the HBs damping ability? Why wouldn't you use a mechanical or Fluidampr? It seems like if your running hard and revving high, that vibration absorption would be more critical than ever...
