I've heard a lot of good things about the Ford 300 motor but my experience with one was in a 90's 1/2 ton 4x4 PU. It was OK but I recall a stock 230 in my parents 63 chevy 3/4 ton PU that seemed like a screamer in comparison.

Are there better years of the 300? Did Ford use them in 3/4 ton 4x4 pickups? For fuel mileage would they be a better choice than an 8?

If you contact the "Frenchtown Flyer" here, he will have all that information.

Good luck. \:\)

The efi cylinder head is more prone to crack. The carb cylinder head is better for all out flow. The efi head is better for low end grunt. Are there better years? All depends, they all made about the same HP/TQ from the factory, with a little more from the efi models, Carb'd engine is a little easier to make more power.

Why have you heard only good things about the ford 300 engine? 1. It makes great low end torque. 2. It lasts forever, why? Because its underpowered from the factory, kinda like the big block ford engines. Why did the 230 feel like a screamer? Because it probably doesnt peak at such a low rpm like the ford 300, the ford engine is about low end grunt, nothing more, bet the 300 makes alot more torque.

Used to run a 240CID (CompCam, stainless 1.94, 1.60 valves, dual ram intake, 42" exhaust primaries, 302 V8 forged pistons) in a Mustang oval dirt track stockcar on a 1/4 mile track. Because of its 3.18" stroke we would see 7200RPM going into number 1 and 3 turns. Never blew up! Smoothest running engine I ever built and what a unique sound coming down the straights. It did embarrass a lot of the V8 racers. Transforming a 240 into a racing engine? You're pretty much on your own. CompCams were a big help in cam selection, Ak Miller tech articles were valuable. The V8 guys get lots of advice - there's tons of information out there for them along with more tons of speed goodies. Why is the 240 Ford a good inline to run? 12-port head, short stroke, 4"bore, long rod 6.8". It will be interesting to see dyno results of the new aluminum head on the 240 as well as the 300!

Ford engineering had a 300 six that made over 600hp in the very early 70's. One of their engineers was also involved in a 300 six that raced in Windsor.I know he pulled the tach out of it cause the driver would let off on it when it hit 8000rpm. when it got wound up it sounded like a friggin jet.
