How much hassle is it to rebuild a Muncie SM 465 for a '68 C/10 w/292?

If you have access to a press and a good assortment of shop tools it is no real problem . There are different levels of re-build kits so be careful on what you purchase . Some just replace the roller/ball bearings and some offer the bushings too . Take a close look at the third gear syncro - this is a high ware item for the 465 and also you can up-grade the weak snapring on the third gear cluster to a full length spacer instead . Make sure the bearings you get are "maximum capacity" instead of std capacity - some re-build kits offer the std. bearings to make the kit cheaper. All in all this is a fairly simple tranny to rebuild - it's just heavy ! HTH, Tom

The gear box I was running would sometimes lock up between 2nd and 3rd. You'd have to slap it or shake the stick to clear it. Could be embarassing in city traffic. I replaced the shift ball, spring and stamped steel shift collar cap, but it still would stick sometimes. Go figure?

I saw in the new Eastwood catalog, on the back page, they listed rebuild kits for 4-speed Muncies by the year. I did not specifically see "SM 465" or "Truck" listed separately. Can I assume these kits are all for car applications? They were made in the USA and the price seemed reasonable.

I have a good SM 465 in Florida that I would sell you pretty cheap. I assume from your monicker that you're from the Sunshine State. If you're interested, e-mail me at: drh@digital-link.net
Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

I'm in that "other" sunshine state, brother, _Arizona_ -- where the sun can kill you! [But only if you let it.] Shipping from Florida to Arizona is prohibitive fot something that heavy. 300#+?. Also I have this perverse desire to fix the one that came out of my rig so I don't have to recalibrate the whole speedo-/bullet thing. As much as some of the local Xmsn shops are asking to rebuild 465's lately, it's enough to make me price a gear press and rebuild kits and do it myself. That way I know what's in it. I have this one unit that came out of the pickup truck and the old one I kept from before that in 1990. With a backlog of already -used 465 trannies, I don't need any more. There's even a good one running in my '71 Jimmy. (Rare in K/5s of this vintage). So for future reference and my own edification, it would be worthwhile to invest in some shop tools and bearing & seal kits, so I can still rebuild 465s long after local shops won't remember how to deal with that much old iron. I do appreciate the offer, however.
