I have a Saginaw 4 speed and also a 3 speed OD unit and I have herd that it is possible to take the OD unit from the 3 speed and mate it to the 4 speed. Is this possible? What is involved? Anyone have any snap shots (pictures to you youngins) to sare? Any and all information is welcome. Thanks Tom

If the overdrive is on the back of the box, then the mainshaft would have to be made to fit into the front of the overdrive... this wouldn't be the case with an ordinary (non-overdrive) box... it may be possible to cut and spline the shaft to suit, but not usually.

I think Saginaw made one in the late 60s. Check www.4speeds.com Good luck, John M.

My apologies, I was referring to the B-W overdrive... that's the only one I knew about.

Thanks Walt for the help. The pictures in the link were gone. I'll keep looking as I want to get as much info as possible before I tear up both trannys.

Walt Thanks for looking for the link. Since I last posted I found out that the OD transmission that I had was a Borg/Worner and was not compatible with the 4 speed. I then desided to rebuild the 3 speed and I will either use it or sell it if I can find a Saginaw OD 3 speed. I'm not in a big hurry to get it changed over. I now have the 3 speed rebuilt and I am collecting parts for the rear end. I bought a 55 56 57 337 rear end from Sonny Rossi and I have been told that it will fit. I plan to just use the pumkin and weld new spring purches to the old rear end. I'm still not certin that it will work as I've been told it will and it won't work. I guess that I'll just have to tear into it to find out. I'm pretty sure that the axels have the same splines as the car axels and I plan to use the old axles. Agin if it dosen't work it will also be for sale.

Well Walt I don't know yet. The rear end I got from Sonny was just the housing and the pumpkin as I was thinking of using just the Pumpkin in my original housing (If it will work)with my axles and backing plates, brakes, and hdwe.

Hot Rod Magazine had an article with pictures on this swap in 1968 I believe. It may have been featured on the cover.

Well Walt I have a 3 speed overdrive transmission that I have rebuilt and it is ready to go. The rear end that I got from Sonny won't work so I'll sell it. I have found a rear end from a GMC 1/2 ton pickup that I can get that has leaf springs and should be a easy swop out. The only thing is I have to come up with a oil pan from a 235 1954 engine to confirm the deal and they are pretty scarse. 55 and above won't work because they have a bump out for the dip stick. If you have a line on an oil pan of this vintage please let me know. Thanks Tom
