Has anyone put in a rear axel from an S-10 4x4? I have heard this application works good, narrows the axel width so tires arent so close to fenders. Anyone know what gear ratio comes standard in this type of axel?

Yes, the 4x4 S10 has been used by many.

Most aftermarket rims are available with a variety of backsets, so you should be looking at rims at the same time you are contemplating your rearend width so you don't end up buying sometyhing twice...

You should have at least 1" of clearance on the inside as well, or it will rub going around corners.

Gearing selection should be somewhere between 2.73 and 4.11 depending on engine/tranny combo and application. Any Chevy parts counter should be able to give you specifics.

The aftemarket also offers a wide selection of gear sets for this rearend.

The top axle is from my 54 Nash. The lower is from an 86 2 wd S10. They are the same width (54.5" as I recall) and very close to the same ratios. All I have to do is change the spring perchs and get a new driveline. Lots more braking power and I don't have to look for scarce brake parts any more!

The later S10's had rear disc brakes and I believe were the same width as drum axles. Ratios depend on whether a stick or auto and if 4x4. 3.08, 3.42, 3.73 were common. You need to take your tire size and trans ratios into consideration when choosing the axle in order to keep from having to buy gear sets later on. I think you would be happy with the S10 axle.
