I have a 66 Chevy 250 bone stock except PS, PB & electric fan. I would like to know if it is ok to adjust the valves with the engine running. I have been told that I need to loosen up the rocker stud nut till it starts ticking and then tighten it down to where it stops ticking. sounds kinda backyard to me.
Any input greatly apreciated.

Jason

Yes, you can adjust hydro's with the engine running. As stated, back it off till you hear it clatter, then tighten until clatter goes away (zero lash), then tighten down further per manual specs. I assume about 3/4 turn?

Do one at a time or you'll never hear clearly what you're doing.

My '62 manual for a 194 says 1 full turn. It states that the idea is to put the lifter in the middle of it travel when the valve is closed. FYI

If it's a stock motor they are Hyd. But a way to check is to push in / down on the center of the lifter If it is out of the block it won't be that easy but it will move if it is hyd. It can also be tested in the block But you would have to losen the rocker and have a way to push or pull down on the rocker& push rod. Hope this helps. }[oooooo]

Thanks Larry. Can I tell from the rocker arms? My experience is with Toyotas, and the pushrod motors have a slot to tighten/loosen. Can I look for the slot?

Just thought I'd post a link here. I have a similar dilemma, but it's involving a mopar flathead.

Topic in mopars, click it.

Just in case anyone here has an answer for me.
