i am currently trying to find a way to transplant the 250 from my 68 gmc truck into my 54 chevy two door car. of course there are very different motor mounts. i am just wondering if anybody out there has done anything similar in the past. any tech help would be appreciated. also would the t-5 tranny swap be an option if it will work.

thanks alot i can not beleive i over looked that. i have been to that site before. i will have more ?s i am sure. this will be the first place i come to.

I put a 292/Turbo 350 in my 54 Bel-Air. I don't know if the 250 is shorter than a 292 but there's not enough room for your fan blade to go on. I only have about a 1/4" space between the water pump pulley and the radiator. I just use an electric fan. But, I'm also using the original radiator. I'm sure someone probably makes one that's thinner that could be installed. I just didn't want to go hacking the radiator support to get one in. I'll probably have to get a different radiator before summer though because the old copper one just doesn't cool that well. It runs about 195 all the time except when going up a long hill and then it will run about 210 or better. That's just too hot. If you install the 250 and use your stock radiator and it doesn't run hot, let me know, I may have something else wrong with mine besides the radiator.

Chevy put the rad on the other side of the support That why you don't have the room And the 194,230,292s are all the same just the 292 is taller. The v8 car had the rad. close to the motor Because it is shorter whtch ment haveing it on teh insdie of the support. hope this helps I have removed v8s from many 55-57s and put back the stock L6 or newer 1s. }[oooooo]

If it's a 54 Chevy, it never had a V-8 in it originally. Not to say someone didn't install one along the way, however. Chevy didn't come out with the OHV V-8 until 55.

Are you still interested in info about this swap--I did this same swap in the early 80's without the use of after market stuff and some simple fab work--let me know and I can give enough info to do it--by the way, the car is still on the road as the guy's daily driver---paulweldit

I am sorry I did not answer back sooner (my computer blew a head gasket) Its really a simple swap -- the L-shaped brackets that bolt to the original 235 block will be re-used.The pass side L-shaped brkt. will bolt to the 250 block with two bolts. Then you need to make a 1/4" plate the picks up the three holes on the drivers side. A spacer will have to be made for the top hole and the plate bolted to the block with proper length bolts. I used a power-glide so the rear trans mounting will be the same for 350 turbo's and some standards(meausre yours).The trans mount in my case fell right in the center of the org. cross member. drill two 7/16 holes inthe top of the crossmember and on the bottom side( it's a square shaped tube) cut a slot for socket access.Be sure to measure your combination's
length and do the trans. mount accordingly. Bolt the motor in place with the trans mount and the pass. mount/level the motor/then bolt the driver side L-shaped brkt in to the frame. It will fit snug against the 1/4" plate bolted to the 250 block. Now weld the two together. You want to use the shortest water pump you can(I think 67 or 68 nova). the radiator will have to be spaced forward about 2" to 2 1/2" depending on the pump length. Then the upper hood structure will have to be trimed to clear the radaitor.
If your using a turbo you may have to trim the frt. of the crossmember for trans service--hope this helps--paulweldit

How do all the aboue mentioned motors compare to a 235 in length and height? I've got a 50 Chevy with a 56 235 now and want to replace the standard trans with a Turbo 350 and 68 Camero rear. I was wondering while it was apart, would it be the right time to go to a few more cubic inches.

no-clue i did some really rough measurements and they appear to be almost the same. if you went with a 292 it may be a little taller then my 250. paulweldit thanks for the good info it should help out alot. i am probably going with a late model 5 speed. i will keep you posted.
