My dad has a 1946 Chevy pickup with a 1961 235 inline 6. The motor has recently been rebuilt and it really runs great. Every day it runs better. I'm just curious what I could do to help it out a little bit? I'm not really into ripping it apart, so what kind of "bolt ons" can be done that would give it just a little more kick. It's never raced and really it's rarely driven. I'm just looking for a little something to make it special. As is it has a single carter YF carb on it. Would changing the carb be of any benefit or is that all the motor can breath already?

I was thinking about an MSD ignition system. I really like the MSD digital 6, however the truck is still on a 6 volt electrical system. We've looked at converting it over to 12 volt and have really decided that it's more trouble than any benefit would really be. MSD makes a box that is nothing more than a glorified transformer that allows you to step up the voltage to run a 12 volt ignition box off of a 6 volt system.

I was thinking that an MSD digital 6 and a very hot MSD coil would allow me to open up the plug gap quite a bit from the miserable small gap they are at now, this would give a little bit easier starting and some better throttle response. What about the distributor? It's a good old fashioned points style POS with a vacuum advance. Any trouble there with the MSD box?

I know not to expect a large power gain from an ignition box, but it certainly can't hurt anything. What do you guys think?

My opinion of course, but that box sounds like a waste of time and money. You could convert to 12V and an HEI distributor (modified 250 HEI or Pertronix conversion) for about the same money. Any engine will respond similarly to the same kinds of modifications. Since the internals are apparently off-limits, about all you could do easily would be to switch to a single 4bbl intake and dual exhaust.
