Hi everyone, I am have a '62 235 Chevy with a Clifford intake, Weber 38/38, Petronix, headers, and a 270 grind Clifford cam. Tuned as good as I can get it the car still seems to lack a lot from a stand still, it wants to bog down if you dump the clutch. I am wondering if the carb is to small or if my problem is somewhere else. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

What are you using for a tranny, and what is the rearend gearing?

A 235 with that much cam and a stock 3spd with highway gears will do that every time.

I have a M20 Muncie 2.56 1st gear, stock rear gears is either 3.36 or 3.52. This is something I want to change anyway to a 3.73. I just noticed that Cliffords recommends the 40 IDF for the 264 cam so I figure that the 270 would be the same or more. I don't don't have any lean problems but thought the air volume might make a difference. I also have a 390 Holley I thought about trying just need to get the plate.

While it's possible that the carburation is part of the problem, I can't tell from here. The gearing is definitely not helping. The 3:73 might be enough to do it, or going to a T5 could also help if you could find one with the 3.76? first gear, and with the overdrive you would have more freedom to play with rearend gearing.

That is one of the next things I want to do also. Just haven't had the time or funds to do it yet. I think I will do the gear sometime this spring and maybe play with the carb a little too. The T5 will come shortly after. While most of my driving is 50 - 60 mph and it is kind of a daily driver still, I don't want to go with anything lower than 3.73 yet. When I have OD I might go steeper. Thanks for all the input.

An old hot rodder rule of thumb says your tranny 1st gear times your rear axle ratio should be around 12 for good off-the-line performance. With a 2.56 ist gear you'll need about a 4.56 rear end to achieve that...with the current combination you're only at about 8-something.

I talked to Larry at Cliffords and he said that intake is the problem. I forgot to mention that the intake isn't heated. I have a plate from Hot Rods of Norco designed for a stock intake with headers that I never used. All I should have to do is drill out the bosses in the Clifford intake and tap them to use the plate, then run copper tubeing from the exhaust. This should work like a stock heated intake. The gear and tranny is still going to happen. I think I will go with the 4.11 Richmond after looking at some rpm charts it isn't that much diff around 60 mph in rpm. Thanks for all the help
