A good start would be 36 degrees total. If you have a degreed balancer its easy. If you don't then wrap your stagger tape around it and measure the damper's circumference. Divide measurement by 10 and then mark the damper that far ahead of the TDC line on it. Example: the damper circumference is 25 inches, 1/10 of that is 2.5 inches, cut a groove on the damper 2.5 inches ahead of the TDC groove. When timing just align that new groove to the TDC mark on the timing tab.

1/10 of 360 degrees is 36 degrees.

If you want to go up to 40 total advance then you align the new 36 degree mark with the 4 degree mark on the timing tab.

That's how we did it in the old days before degreed balancers and stick on timing tape. I still mark all my balancers at 36 this way.

After running my 292 in stock form & tuning it as best I could for maybe 6 mo. & 6K mi., I changed the dist. vac. advance from ported to manifold vacuum. Had to set the dist. a bit back & experiment with it, but when done tuning, I have a lot more power right off idle on up thru the RPM range. Proof was that my MPG went up considerably. Also runs cooler in all driving conditions. This is in my 55 Bel Air, 3sp., & 3.08 gears. Doug
