Deano,
Hi! Except for that ocean we're neighbors.
I'm just learning about the old six "stovebolt" myself - I have written one of those engine dyno programs so I always look for dyno data to compare. Here is the best I've found so far for sources - they're old but worth a read:

1. Bill Fisher's California Bill's Chevrolet, GMC & Buick Speed Manual [1954 but reprinted recently]

2. Roger Huntington's "Souping the Stock Engine", [1950 but reprinted recently]

3. May 1955 Hot Rod, pg 14, 9 dyno tests build up of a 261 truck to 200hp.

Having got my computer to assess all these dyno tests at once, it looks pretty challenging to make 200hp on pump gasoline anyway. But I think if you started with these old references & then see what is available now - new or old - you could make a good plan before buying stuff

I always enjoy seeing the stock straight 6's at the car shows, though I have v-8s too - I agree, everybody knows you can put a 500hp smallblock v8 into a 55, so what?

This way, if you build that 235 carefully you can get some great gas mileage and have a really rare antique too - \:\)

Greetings and welcome aboard . . .

DeuceCoupe has pointed out the 'fair dinkum' historical experts on the chevy 6. Huntington also published books specifically about the flat-head Ford and Chevy/GMC:
"How to Hop Up Cheverolet and GMC engines" 1951. The reprints of these books are available on amazon.com almost all the time.

The originals show up on ebay now and again.

Both of these gentlemen are my inspiration - which says alot because I have a v-thingie in my garage and it was my original intention to swap-it when I started shopping for an old Fleetline.

Oops did I just admit that on the inliners board?

Shame on me.

regards,
stock49

I'm fairly sure that the Hop up 6 book is in stock at "Wheels of Time" in Dandenong, or if not then Larry at Graffiti has 'em.

These are old tricks, but still relevent today.

Give me a yell if you need some info/contacts etc relating to Stovebolt 6's.

At least there's 2 of us out there!!!LOL \:\)

Dear Deano;

You should plan on a 261 engine if you want the stock/orginal look etc.

As mentioned It's easy to make one 200+ horsepower which is around twice what GM put in there.

All speed equipment you get for your 235 will fit one (head too) so there will bo no money waisted.

Shiping is a bit of a cost, but 'good things' don't come cheap.

Good luck. \:\)
