Hey everyone im new to the inliners but so far im loving this website. To get right to the point i have a 1970 nova 230 w/powerglide all stock 90,000 original miles with a rebuild at 65,000 (rings, bearings).I would like to know the best way to see high 14's in the 1/4 i would settle for low 15"s ,not that im going to be drag racing it or anything but i want to put a lil pep in its step if ya know what i mean. I would like to keep it streetable and i dont want to use nitrous. How close would headers,x-pipe with dual flows, itake, and 4 brl carb(500cfm edelbrock) get me to 14's. thanks, 6 banger newbie

We need to know what your rear gear ratio is. Stock coverter?
You would need to make it as light as possible.
But if you just have 308 gears(guessing),non posi rear, stock converter.3400LB car I would say w/those bolt on items you mentioned it could do a 17-18 second 1/4 mile?
Powerglide is killing your launch & ability to accelerate quickly. Torque converter needs to stall to @ least 2500 RPM. There is a list of items you need to do before it will run 14 & even 15's in the 1/4
Two cents thrown. :-)

Welcome to the Inliners world of Buzzing 6s
If want to see 14s go look at my videos lol jk. Anyway if you still have the stock 3.08 gears Chevy loved so much You'll never see 14s with those gears.
So questions being What gears do you have? What cam? What kinda compression are you running/Have
Stock cam Stock copmression stock gears and the weight of that year 70 which I know is between 3000 & 3200 lbs I know this because i have owned them all from 62-70 an my 69 SS tipped in at 3230. So with saying that You would be Lucky to even see high 15s let alone get out of the 16s
My 64SS Stock Motor(250 155hp) Stock 3.08s Headers Offey 4b intake with glide ran mid 18s Changed out the tranny to a 3speed Sag. dropped to Mid 17s
So my 2cent opion to you is Swap in a new cam stay with a hyd cam. Bump up the compression a little,Step up to a HEI dist. Offey intake small 4b Headers Or some type Of Dual exhaust. and change the rear gears to the Very Least a 3.32, 3.55.Maybe even think about swapping to a Turbo 350 You 6 will like the extra Gear.
When I first Built my 250 back in 1984 with a 583/ 607 Mech. cam Pushing better then 12-1 a 4speed 4b intake system Headers and a point dist. 3.08 gears. The best the car ran was 15.15 in 3rd. All day long 24-7 Close to 17 yrs later when I finaly got gears in that SHOULD have been in a Long time Ago. and the Motor showing it's age The best it ran was a 14.3 in 3rd gear Never got to 4th. Now If that same build had the Right gears in it from the start the car should have ran mid to low 13s. And Yes This/that was my daily driver. To ME. For Most that was way to much Cam & compression for a daily driver for many.
So any more questions Just fire away We'll be Happy to help you get close to something.

Well nogo69
If you want to step up the performance then it is time to Think of what you really want & Want to do. 1) first off a cam change is in need a Rv style Or tow cam. But i would say step up to something a little bigger.(stay with a hdy cam) But don't get to wild here because you will surely Need to step up you stall convertor for sure. 2) up-Grade to a HEI. 3)Intake system. Stick with a Offey intake Good Low to Mid range Power & torque. 4)dual exhaust. Either headers Or Tom Langdons dual cast exhaust. 5) Think about the Rear Gears.( 3.32,3.55) 6) Your L6 will like a extra Gear so think about a Tranny up-grade ( turbo 350 OR? something like the 700r OD) a OD is Nice it will also help In your double duty ( daily driver/ weekend racer) with the lower first gear, Plus the OD for those wanted MPGs 7) Last but not Least think about getting some head work done.At the Very Least clean the ports up and a good 3 angle valve job.
One of the Biggest keys to making our L6 make more power is The HEAD,If the motor can't breath good Your getting no where. A good Valve Job and Mild port work(bare bones clean-up the Ruff casting)will run you around a grand(1000) Hope this helps for starters.

Hey guys thanks for all the help. I think im just gonna leave my 70 as a cruiser because thats a lil more than i want to spend on this car right now because most of my funds are going to my 69 nova big block car plus i would like to leave it original because it matching #'s, low miles ,one owner and i have all the original paper work from the dealer(dealer invoice, preorder form, manual protecto plate,ect.).I get ragged cuz its a 4door 6 banger but hey i luv that car. I think im going to just run a y pipe with some dual flow masters for now and leave it at that for a while. thanks guys

Inliner member Matt Carmone ( pic in the archives here ) has a 70 Nova that ran in mid to low 14's. Car had full interior trim and wasn't lightened. I don't know all the engine details but a LOT was done to it and ran a TH350 with a convertor and 4.56's in the rear. It also had nitrous although I don't know what the shot was or how often he pushed the button. He once told me that to go any quicker and break into the 13's he had to lighten the car up and he didn't want to do that. He has since stopped racing it and detuned it slightly to make it better for street driving.
I guess this proves the point that you can have a race car or you can have a street car but you can't always have it both ways, it will always be a compromise somewhere.
