I have a 1966 Chev pu with a 292 in it and am looking for a way to upgrade to electronic ignition to reduce the number of tune ups and improve performance. A local shop suggested the Crane XRi units but they don't fit in 6 cylinder distributor caps. I was told that any 292 distributor with electronic ignition would do. Does anyone have knowledge of this swap, and what do I need to do it? What years work?

Try using the Petronixs electronic ignition update. These are found most everywhere. If you cannot find it, pick up most any Hotrod magazine and you'll find it in there. They are extremely easy to install and work fantastic!

Or you can pick up a Stock HEI from any 250 block from 72 on up some had the coil in the cap some didn't But they wil all Work .And you need to make sure that you have a full True 12volts going to it. Hope this helps .

Going with the coil-in-cap version would be my sugestion. Should be a cheaper solution than the Pertronix, and only needs one keyed power wire to the coil. Make sure you aren't using a balast resistor or a resistor wire.

Thanks for all the ideas. I will probably go with a stock unit from a later model, as I have a very tight budget and found an integral coil unit at a local wreckers for under $50. I can't seem to find a visable balast resistor, how do I check for a resistor wire. I am assuming using a meter there is some variance in voltage? Anyone know the steps?

The wire coming to the coil should have two wires on it. If you will look at them, one will either be a brown wire or a fabric insulated wire. If you peel the insulation back a little, you will see that it is small single strand wire. This is your resistor wire. You will have to run a new wire from the ignition switch to the distributor. Hope this helps. Joe
