some time in the last 3o yrs a 6-v battery was installed in the old, bone stock 47 Plymouth. However it was put in with neg grnd. What should I be prepared for in the way of repairs?

You may have to do a procedure to the generator to get the field magnets to remember which way the electricity is supposed to flow, but that's about it. I know what I just said sounds very silly, but it's nothing more than holding a battery wire momentarily on the correct generator terminal just like you would do if you put a fresh rebuilt unit on.

Other than that, nothing should be hurt or bad. I've made that mistake of putting the battery in backwards, and it only really affects the ammeter and the gas gauge.

edit: the ammeter reads backwards and the gas gauge is plain inaccurate. they return to normal by connecting the battery correctly.

I'd forgotten about polarizing

How about anything detrimental to the radio?

I can think of a couple wild guess circumstances that could mess it up, but most would involve static electricity while playing the radio and a battery charger is hooked up. Not likely. You shouldn't have any trouble with the radio other than a whole lot of dust inside the tuner pile and dirty contacts on the volume control

I would check the regulator inside. Many times when that happens (battery backwards) it will fuse the cut-out rely shut. Give it a "look see" before trying to 'polarize' it.

Good luck, John M., #3370.
