Im runnin a 57 chevy truck with the original 235,the generator went and I swapped to a alternator( used a barcket kit i found,very trick part,but for anyone using one,the hot tip is dont forget to get yourself a longer belt to drive the sucker.)The problem I have been having is since i swaped in the alternator, I have been going thru points liek tic-tacs. I think my problem is being on a budget,i used the original voltage regulator for this externally regulated alternator,rather the tryin to track down the proper regulator,or springing the extra cash for a internally regulated one.Any one had a problem like this,or any ideas on how to solve it?

Those regulators are adjustable (13.6-14.2 VDC)is the range with engine 1500-1800 RPM lights on.

If yours has a cover that's riveted on, get one at a salvage yard (Delco)that has screws.

Also; Check the voltage at the coil. Range there is: (6.8-7.2) when running 1500 with battery voltage at 14 +/- etc.

Good luck, John M, #3370....

D6ds, Hi. This problem makes me think of the ballast resistor/resistance wire as the problem or the solution. Don't points burn on straight 'battery strength' juice and it needs to be reduced. Sorry I can't be more specific right now. Just a thought.

I realize this is an old post and the guy that asked hasn't been back, but.....

He said he used the original regulator. An alternator will not work with a generator regulator.

Dear Cletis;

Good point. I guess I was focused on the resister issue(s).

The early alternators (1963)with external regulaters were adjustable though. Today, most use the "one wire" unit as the regulater is built in.

I personally use a 12V generator/regulater so I can keep stock amp guage and 'orginal look'.

The smallest "one wire" Alt. is 60 Amp & will 'toast it' etc.

Are you replacing the condenser when you replace the points. If it is defective or not the correct one for the points you are using, that will cause the points to burn. You may even have to go to a condeser that has a higher MFD rating to allieveate the problem. Just some thoughts.Paul
