Has anybody painted their engine the same color as their car? I have seen this done on many "show cars" and a few "drivers" and I wondered how (if they really do drive them), do they get the paint to stick and not fade with the heat. I suppose that they don't really drive them, but I don't know. ??
Does anybody make custom colors in an engine paint?
Thanks,
Ed

Interesting! I've wonder the same thing but never followed up on it. You might get hold of "House of Kolor Kustoms" or "PPG" to see what they might have to say.

We did it on a little 1275 BMC motor. Shot it first in engine paint followed by a slightly darker shade than the body. Did get some discoloration around the exhaust ports on the head, but looked deceet for the entire time we owned the car. The headers were thermal coated so that may have helped save the paint.

From what I've heard, so called hi temp engine paint is just a way to charge more for paint. I have read several times in different magazine articles that if you have the engine CLEAN that regular primer and automotive paint will work just fine. No matter what you use, it will discolor around the exhaust ports and the crossover in the intake on a V8. Joe

i gave up on the spray cans years ago. i just use stove paint as a base and then paint over it with enamel from a spray gun. it holds up well. the block has to be clean like cooked and wiped down with thiner.

Gentlemen;

Yes; It can be done W/O major expense.

Most Automotive Paint stores will make you a spray can to match your car. Like any other paint job (it must be clean first).

After that you can 'touch up' around the headers before you go to "show off". It gets so hot there no paint will last.

Headers/exhaust manifolds can be 'coated' with a special process, but that's another world.

I had a 472 caddy in an 82 Rgeal painted to match, except for the exhaust ports it did great. Just make sure it's really clean, and I used high-temp gray as a primer. I got my paint put into a spray can from the parts store. Doing that to my 62 too, in the Crystal Turquoise.
