I've been seeing a flat-black, primered, '53 Chevy around town for several years. It's lowered and has a 'rat-rod' look. Every time I see it parked somewhere, I look at it......expecting to see rust forming under the primer.
However, there's never been a sign of rust!
Finally, I was at the liquor store (getting a flu remedy) and caught the kid getting into his car. I remarked that I expected to see his car rusting through the primer, but wondered why it hadn't done so.
The kid (a KID is anyone under 60, to me) told me the car was NOT painted with primer, but John Deere flat black hood paint! He said he sanded, primed, then painted the car with it 5 years ago, with no sign of rust, since. He said the John Deere paint was $24 a gallon and tough as nails!
I didn't know anything was as cheap as $24 at a John Deere dealer!
Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

Gentlemen; In the 50s when 'Hot Roding' began, only "cheap charlie" or the really fast guys left their cars in primer. The 'really fast' crowd put all their $ into the engine and all the T & Ds that didn't last. "cheap charlie" only could afford a spray can and sat on "penny pincher hill" by the drags, cause he didn't have ticket either. I got a job cleaning up at a Body Shop & painted mine almost free. How times have changed. Happy trails.

Yeah! JD black is good stuff. The dealer also sells other non-John Deere colors as well for a low price. Check out the sellection. The paint sprays beautifuly and the gloss is superb. Their rattle can exhaust paint is excellent. For a good 70% gloss black paint, get Catterpiller black - about the same price as hardware store rust paint.Get it at your nearest Cat parts dept.

Where are you at? Just remember though. Your top coat is only as good as what you have underneath. The top coat has nothing to do with the longivity of the body work for the most part. Just because you do not see rust coming through doesn't mean the top coat is of high quality. It means the guy that did the job knew what he was doing before the top coat got squirted on.

Do a search on the John Deere home site and go to dealer locations. It will bring up a map and scroll to the bottom. Put in your location and you will get a map to the closest dealer near you. I personally use a Single stage urethane with a flattening agent or BC/CC with the flattening agent in the clear. Better UV resistance, chip resistance and chemical resistance. eg. brake fluid, etc. hope this helps ya out.

I always use either a gloss single stage Urethane and add a flattening agent to it if it is black. Any other colour I will add the flattening agent to the clear. For instance. I use 5/8 of an ounce of flattening agent to 2 ounces RTS when squirtin' the black.
