Anybody here bought a drill doctor? How good is it? Does it really sharpen the bit straight and correctly? Or is it another one of those scams. It looks too easy and when you buy it... it's a flimsy piece of plastic garbage. Is there a cheaper alternative? JBrancheck

I also have one. Works great,& it also sharpins masonry bits. No problems so far. Saves me a lot of money, instead of constantly buying new drill bits or pay to have the old ones resharpened.

I have on also. I was well worth the money. Like Walt, I dont use it everyday, but it is nice to have around. The bit get positioned in a holder on the side of the machine before it gets sharpened. I dont know if I got a special one, but mine will also put a notch in the bit tip that helps when drilling the hole. I paid like $100 for it awhile ago, and have saved that much just by sharpening bits instead of buying new ones.

I just looked up the one that I have. I have the DD400. The drill doctor site says that the one I got is only available at select stores. The special thing it does is called split point tips. It can make a standard bit into a split point bit. Sorry about the second post, just wanted to add more info.

Me To I have the one that does up to 3/4 inch bits that I have owned for several years I have used it so much the wheel needs to be replaced. I sharpen all my bits split point I think they work better. I have seen many other sharpeners but none that compare to a drill doctor. A friend of mine has spent more buying cheap units that don't work than my drill doctor cost, and it was near $200 when I got it if I remember right.
Been there, Done that, Hope to live long enough to do it again. Big Bill I.I.# 4698

The Drill Dr. is a money saver, no if's and or But's about it, they are limited as far as small bit's go but they aren't that expensive anyway. Mine get's used weekly, and as far as converting the valve grinder over never thought about doint that, but I did make a tool post grinder for my lathe and it work's qwell for larger bits and edn mills reamers and such, I did cut out a piece of leather to wrap aroune the tool post and lay across the way's to catch the grinding's and keep them from doing any damage. Do put a guard on the grinding wheel, don't ask me how I know, but it took 11 stitches.
