I am looking at a 1977 Ford F100 pickup that I may buy.It has the 300 six in it.I would like to know the good and bad things about them.I do know they like to crack exhaust manifolds.Ford made this engine for over 30 years,so they must be a good design.I have worked in wrecking yards for over 30 years, but have not seen many of them scrapped.I do know the early ones could be had with heavy duty rods and cranks.HELP------

Well I bought the above truck.1977 F150 with a 300 six, auto,ps,pb,and a aftermarket am/fm cassette.Factory dual gas tanks.I got it from the daughter of the original owner.90k miles and has a camper shell.New battery, new master cyl,new radiator, rebuilt carb.and a set of good used tires.I put on a rebuilt p/s pump and need to replace the steering coupler. The engine runs excellent and is very quiet. The padded dash is in excellent cond.,as is the rubber floor mat.The front seat has one small rip. This will be my work/hunting rig.I am installing a dual battery setup in it also. This is quite a upgrade from my 1967 F100 with too many miles. Will a set of dual exhaust manifolds off of one of the newer 300 sixes fit on my engine and still use the stock intake?

The EFI exhast manifolds (cast iron dual headers) is actually a common swap. They're cheeper than tube headers & will rarely crack or wear out. May not quite flow as well as tube headers, but still pretty good. Far as I know the EFI exhasts will work with the stock intake, but you're better off to go with a cliffy or offy intake. This way you can use a 2 or 4 bbl carb, won't change your gas milage much (might even improve it a bit actually). The cliffy you might have to grind a little bit to get the 2 to fit together, but other than that you'll be fine. I'm currently running an offy, ford 2bbl & EFI exhast.

My thought about the factory duals was less chance of two short manifolds cracking verus a long one piece one. Also i like the sound of duals on a inline six engine. And third, maybe a slight increase in gas mileage. The 300 six pulls like a v8 in that heavy truck. So far it is getting far better than my 1967 F100 with a newer 360 v8 in it.I am installing fog lights, dual battery setup,a complete set of after market SW gauges and a CB radio in it.
