Hi there all.
First off all i was looking sometime for a site like this,thumbs up for a great info bulletin.
Now my question i am a kind of new in the sixcillinder game, have a few v8 s , 327 , 350.
But who dont, now i want to built my chevrolet paneltruck (56)a nice 6 banger just to show sixes can go.
I live in the Netherlands and gas is expensive overhere so we like running on propane no problems with that.
Now what type of engine is best to go with (bigger the better?)how about parts, newer the better?,are the making go fast stuf for all modelsand where to get them.

I hope some can answer my q,s

Well, WANDER, This is going to ruffle a lot of feathers and gaul a few purists but here goes:

FORD 300

Built from 1964 - 1996, 7.4 MILLION were produced and found in every corner of the globe. Lots of aftermarket equipment, and strong as anvils, with seven main bearings, a 12 port head and 4" bores standard. Did I mention they are strong as anvils?

OK Purists, bring it.

If you want to stay chevy and can get a 292. or if you don't mind Mixing parts then the 300 would have to be on top. Can't beleave I just said That LOL But French is right They are a tuff motor. I'm not sure all will inner change.(pistons rods stuff like that. But already having a 4in bore should make things easier and being a 12 porthead well making that breath should be even easier as well.

Ps No i won't get 1 I likes my Chevys and it's bad enough I have a 9in. in it. But strange said my cars is to heavy for there GM3rd member.

Hey Twisted,
We'll forgive you for the nine inch rear. Truth be told, I wouldn't leave home without my trusty GM powerglide transmissions. But you do raise a valid point and that is, "Do you want to pursue the best parts available or the best parts available within a certain brand?" Some hot rodders want the best components regardless of brand while others wouldn't be caught dead running a Brand X part.

Its a big world - there's room for varying opinions.

Hi there all

I went for a search in my garage and found the next.
1x cast.# 93406004 = 292 cid
1x cast.# 3788406 = 230 cid
1x cast # con 3 e166 dont now what this is number is on ignition side between transmission flange and ignition.
Trough witch year are the 292'made and is there a casting # list after 84.
I think i try the chevy stuf first because it is already there, when it wont hold i can always go with the ford 300 i just wand a good performer,so let me now some opinions.
Also just ordered the book from Leo Sant.
hope to find some good info there.
Any books recomended let me now.

Twisted, even my "all" AMC sand drag car found on the racin' rides page has the trusty Ford 9". It also has a 904 trans, but it's really made by Chrysler. I guess it's not "all" AMC!

the reason I wanted the strange GM center is it take less power then the 9in member itself because the pinion is lower on the ford then it is in GM. GMs is closer to the center so it takes less power. But they said it's only for cars under 3000lbs and right now the car is at 3000lbs with me in it. But it still retains ALL stock sheet metal & glass. }[oooooo]

I've heard of this before. What is the lowest gear ratio that you can get for that GM/Ford center section? Does the centerline of the universal joint extented toward the motor more than a tipical 9"? My drive shaft is only 11 inches now.

HI THERE AGIAN

This topic is now about rearends, i have the rear of a 72 sub (posietraction).
But dont get me wrong i need as much info as possible to built my first six.
The original plan is to take the best, biggest six and make a strong runner from it for daily driving.
So i need experiences from other people, for example i want to turbo or blower charge it but where to start.
Making headers is not a problem for me but i like to hear about projects from others.

If you allready have a useable 292, then use it. There are guys around here using the 250/292 on propane, so the pistons are available somewhere.

There are plenty of books on forced induction. Try www.motorbooks.com or www.amazon.com for starters.

A '72 Suburban is probably too wide for your '56. Do you want 5 or 6 lugs? What kind of gear ratio do you want to run?

What does the '56 currently have in it?
Bellhousing, starter, motor mounts, etc... will all be an issue for a 230/250/292 type engine.

What kind of tranny are you planning to use?

when i went to the 9in I had to have the drive leightened about a 1in if i remember right.

Wander (propaneburner): You might recognize my name as being Dutch. It's Teunis Wyers. I'm building a 292 six to run on propane right now. Before you decide on a piston, you need to decide on turbocharging or supercharging, because that has a big effect on what compression ratio will work. I'm going without any boost, so I want a fairly high compression ratio. You can't get there with either the stock pistons, that have a deep dish in them, or the LPG ones, that have a dish also. My current plan is to use a TRW piston designed for a Ford tractor that has a flat top, and is close enough that my engine man can make it work. They will cost about $350US for the set.
