'53 chevy 3/4 ton has original type front ball bearings. I am doing brakes, etc. and was planning to upgrade to tapered roller bearings. The old ones look perfect, so now I have a choice: keep em as is or upgrade. It ain't cheap, so it better be a real improvement. Any advise??

go ahead and use them if they are good.clean real good,DO NOT USE GAS. Kerosene works, save it and reuse. Blow dry,BUT DO NOT LET BEARING SPIN, Check inner race for pitting,Repack, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. up snug then back till you feel nut give, this is almost a finger tight thing If they are good they will last long enought to save up for taper bearings. I had a 54 burb in late 60,s. went to LA, Yellow Stone, Seatle,ALL OVER OREGON,WASHINGTON. You just need to remeber how these trucks were used when they where new. road trips require a survival kit. Tapers are better, they keep thing a little more stable, strait, Butt bucks is bucks, You may find you will need to buy a part you REALY NEED,

On my 42 1 1/2 ton I made the switch by going to a bearing distributor, they measured everything and came up with some metric one's that worked.

By doing this instead of going to the local parts house I saved a lot!
