To Martin in particular, but any info welcomed. Martin, I have a T-5 finally, from a '91 S-10 that had a 2.8 with a 3.73 rear end. The little metal tag has partially succombed to the road salt and weather of Maine, but I am able to read the very front near the bolt hole, towards the other end the tag is pretty much eaten away. Info I have, Build Code in Glove Compartment, MM3 and MM5. Just kinda generic I guess. Numbers cast into tranny top, 13-52-097-917. Numbers on metal tag, 15965 and just below that, 1352. Nothing else appears on the tag that I can see. I steel wooled it and scraped it a LITTLE, and still nothing. The ID codes I've seen on Internet Sites do not list a CHevy S-10 for 1991 info. Any ideas? Thanks, Perley

What specifically are you trying to determine?
Identification is by the metal tag or by the paper bar coded tag on the top cover. None of the numbers cast into the housing will be of use. Should be something like 1352-xxx ... If it is really a '91 S-10, then it would be NWC and have an electric speed sender. If you want to know the gear ratios, put it into gear and count the rotations...

Someone taught me to tell the gear ratio of a manual trans you could put it in gear, mark the input shaft and turn the output shaft 10 turns. Then the input shaft will turn the nuber of times of the first gear ratio. If it has a 10 spline input shaft it's even easier as the splines count the decimals (ie 3.35 would turn 3 whole turns and 3 1/2 splines).
If you are wondering if it is a WC or a NWC, look at the front countershaft bearing cup (below the input shaft and behind the belhousing) if it's a NWC it will be smooth. If it is a WC and unmolested it will have a shallow relief machined into it across most of the visible face with a small raised ring with Timken and a part number embossed into the ring.
My, what a steep learning curve. Erik II#5155

Hi Perley. The number after 1352 is what I need to identify your transmission. The next option is the paper tag on top with the bar code. If neither of these numbers are available then you'll have to do as Gearhead says and count the shaft rotations.

Sorry folks, the metal tag has only that which I gave before, anything else is long gone. The paper tag -- same-o, same-o. Victim of Maine Winters--------- I will try the turn and count method, although it really doesn't make any difference to me really. The build code MM3 identifies it as 3:76 in first gear and 2:18 in second gear. More than that it don't matter none. And it's a NWC, again, who cares. It's going behind a 1969 GM 6 cylinder 230 c.i. motor. And at 64 years I don't that I will be leadfoot enough to harm it any. Only a 10" clutch too. I'm happy just to have the 5 speed with no more dollars than I got in it. Thanks to all who answered. Perley

Then you have pretty much the same transmission I have. Mine's an '85 Camaro 4 cylinder with the same first and second gear ratios. Definitely on the low side but it will be ok if you're using a 15 inch rim and tire.
