Just got the 250 back from rebuild, and i had a simple question. What is the correct way to replace the flywheel? There is an extra hole in the bolt pattern on the inside and two small ball shaped indents near the teeth. I just need to know how to line it up because i searched my 66' Chevy service manual and couldnt find what i was looking for. Also, my flywheel is pretty rusty (just surface it seems) from not having a convertor/flywheel shield (whatever its called) for years. Would it be safe to strip the rust with a wire wheel or should i get a new wheel? And does anyone know where i can get the aforementioned shield? This is all for a 250/pg/column shift in a 66' Chevy bel-air.

If I am understanding the question correctly, the "extra" hole in the flexplate is for the alignment dowel in the end of the crank. The shield should be the same for any PG with the same size flexplate. You can one from a junk yard, any racer who runs a PG as most do not use them or probably even get a chrome one at most speed shops.

As far as the flexplate itself is concerned, check it carefully for cracks. If there are any replace it. Make sure where it mounts to the crank and the crank itself are perfectly clean and smooth. Also check the teeth to make sure they are good. New non-sfi plates are cheap, so if there is any doubt......
