Long time lurker, first time poster. :-)

I've done some searching and only found similar questions, but no answers. Does anyone know offhand if the SBC recurve kits work on non-hei straight six distributors?

I think there fairly universal, since most distributors are spun on a machine to verify the advance curve characteristics, any changes to the springs and weights can be made at that time. Sometimes, final tweaking is necessary by grinding on the weights slightly if the ones in the kit aren't exactly the right amount of weight(too heavy)!

The springs from the SBC kits can be used. There is a lot more to it than just swapping out some springs. Here's a link that I found doing a search for HEI recurving;

http://www.webrodder.com/article.php?AID=53&SID=60&CID=15

I also have a text file on a procedure to recurve the distributor to your engine. If you don't find one in your search of the web send me a pm and I'll send it to you.

Every so often I see this subject come up on the bulletin board and can't resist answering because of the great performance improvement (idle thru full throttle) I experienced on my 302 GMC. Fitst, I recommend you get an HEI distributor. They were made for the 250 and 292. Second, read and follow two articles. http:// http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/distcurve.html and http://members.aol/dvandrews/timing.html. The key is to use strong springs and re-shaping the center plate as the second article indicates. When you search the internet for these two articles you will get many more on the subjest as well.

Radar, the second link has been shut down. Here's another link;

http://www.pontiacstreetperformance.com/psp/distcurve.html

out of my text file. All HEI distributors are smog distributors and will not have the same as a 63 or earlier distributor for the same motor. They definitely need recurving for performance.

For points, the L6 and V8 are different.

All early large cap HEI advances are the same, L4 L6 & V8.

All you have to do is check applications when looking at buying the parts. It should say what it fits...

Thanks for all the info, so it looks like common off the shelf recurve kits are not available for points L6 distributors... Looks like I need to find me an HEI then.
