I am installing a original AC remote oil filter on a 53 powerglide 253, the engine has run non detergent oil from new with out ever having a filter, what is the proper procedure when installing a filter for the first time ? do I stay with non detergent oil ? can I switch to modern type of oil ? should I drop the pan and start cleaning out the sludge ? thx gmguy

Check the tech tips for the article on the full flow conversion. It may help on the filter install.

DO not if it is true, but have heard when going from non-detergent to detergent oil on an older motor, leaks can start due to the detergent cleaning out build up that acts as a seal...
