A neighbor gave me a Muncie 319 unit from a 62 Impala. He went to a 4 speed. I currently have a 318 (no OD) column shifted in my 65 Bel Air. I opened up the 319 and several of the individual gears and counter shaft gears are chipped up.

I found a few online sites that sell these gears, but they are pretty $$$$.

I just thought it would be worth asking if any of you guys know of other sources for gears, perhaps used ones? The bearing/gasket kits are available and seem to be reasonable, but the gears are gonna kill the project if I have to pay full retail. It would be cheaper to go to a later 4 speed or T5 on the floor.

Thanks.

Unbelievable the prices now a days, I bought a '28 model A coupe (running on 3 cylinder back in'65) my old man flipped-in his day they were $25.00! The more things change, the more they stay the same-or some Yogism like that.

I never personally saw a 3 speed muncie, or know what the 319 means, but there were 3-speed muncies standard behind 396s in chevelles (everybody bought the optional muncie 4 speed though) so the 3-speed is probably pretty rare (and strong).

Is the muncie quiet? If so, for the money involved I think I would run it until..., and then replace it with a modern T5, I think somebody would buy it even broken at a big swap meet. Another thought, heck, the automatics are far cheaper these days and also have o/d, maybe one of those.

The forward half of the 319 is identical to a 318 except for a hole for the reverse lockout. It shouldn't be any problem to put the B-W OD on a serviceable SM318.

Lots of good info on the OD here.

I recently replaced some gears and the bearings and seals in one for my '54 GMC Suburban. I love it. Drove it from here to Phoenix last month and it was nice on the highway.

What markings would a 319 have on the case? What do they look like?
The biggest difference in the OD and non OD versions of trannys that use the Borg OD, beside a hole for reverse kick out, is that the tail end of the main shaft is designed to drive the OD unit. The rest of the trans stuff is the same.

How big are the chipped up spots? You might want to consider just dressing them with a dremel.
