Inliners International Forums General Discussion Engines identifying an inline engine

I am thinking of purchasing a 68 GMC 3500 dually pickup from a local gentileman. He is not the original owner, and doesn't know if the straight six is a 292. What numbers on the block will identify it as a 292?

Measure the pushrod covers:
-> 4 inches : 194-230-250
-> 6 inches : 292

The casting numbers are to the right of the dip stick for checking the oil 6 or 7 numbers. Also quick check is the height of the side 4 inches high 250 or smaller, 6 inches high 292. Hope this helps.

250 has two equal length p/rod covers, 292 is one big cover

also 292 pass side engine mount is about 3" forward of the driver side one

292 are taller too, bigger looking in the engine compartment

292s have two separate side covers for the lifter galleries. As noted earlier in the thread, 194-250 engines use ~4" covers and 292s ~6" and on 292s the motor mounts do not attach to the block in a straight line while the smaller motors do.
