I know that some of the head bolts on the 292 go into water. What is the best way to seal the head bolt threads while still getting true torque? I had a machinist tell me to use white plumbers paste. Can that handle the heat? What about Permatex black? Is something like that better?

I'm pretty new at this and while the 292 short block I bought is assembled well I still have a lot to do. I have a rebuilt head and have to install that and I have never adjusted hydraulics before, I'm not real positive about the head torque numbers and sequence, not sure of a number of things. Are there any good sites for getting this info? I find tons of tips for V8's but I'm not always sure if the info is applicable to my 292. Any help would be appreciated.

Use Loctite 518 anaerobic gasket maker on the head bolts. It's red. Head bolt torque to 95 ft lbs. You can torque bolts from center out in a criss-cross pattern and tighten in 10=20 lb increments to 95 ft lb each. Manuals like Santucci's Power Manual or a Haynes manual can help.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I ordered the Haynes manual.
