So this may be a simple stupid question but I would like an answer still. I have a 1971 chevy 250 in a Nova. It's the original numbers matching engine, in the original chevy orange (it's pretty rough). The thing that throws me off is the head is clearly painted blue, which means it's more then likely not the original head which is fine but why would it be blue? I am thinking possibly a head off a marine block since I believe those were blue. Any help would be appreciated.

The cyl head was removed & had a valve job done then painted & reinstalled.
Someone painted the cyl head in the engine compartment.

I would agree with MBHD . . . someone repainted the head with the GM 'corporate' blue that made the scenes in the mid 70's. I actually preferred it years ago and used it on a three-two-seven bent eight in a '68 Impala . . . looked like it belonged there even though it was wrong wrong wrong . . .

Is there a casting number on it to confirm this on the head? I am sure you're probably right though that's kind of what I had figured.

See if the head has smog holes plugged above the intake ports, that could help indicate the vintage of the head a little better.

I'm guessing you guys are right. Pulled the head tonight, currently tearing down the car to totally rebuild and want to freshen up the engine for hopefully a supercharger along will some forged pistons. Checked out the head valves are standard size standard bore. Thank god the bores on the engine look really really good actually. Thanks for the help just one of those curiosity things I always wondered about. Time to get out the degreaser you can't believe how filthy this engine is.

Chevy truck engines were blue from the factory, even pickups.

I hate Chevy orange. It's tacky. Blue is a much better look.

I agree on not being a huge fan of orange but ran respect it. Honestly most the rest of the engine is totally black from grime haha!
