I'm considering replacing my original "option" by-pass filter on my 56 235 with an Amsoil by-pass unit to give me a spin-on filter element. Thoughts??? Thanks

"By-pass" filters only filter about 1/6 of the engine oil, when working at their best.

Many times they leak and start fires as the pressure line is so close to the exhaust pipe. Because of this they are best disposed of & plugs put in the block.

An oil fire gets hot so fast, that by the time you know your on fire, It's to late to stop it.

Many will argue otherwise, but factory filters didn't come along (6 cyl) utill 1963 and they were no where near the exhaust.

Changing your oil regulary is the best way too protect your engine.

The by-pass filter was on the vehicle when I purchased it. One thing I did not like was that it was connected with copper tubing with compression fittings which can fail due to vibration. Saw the results you spoke of when an exteranl metal oilline on a ford broke. I have replaced them high pressure rubber hoses employing inverted "something or other" ( forgot technical term:))fittings. These hold up in racing conditions so I'm not that concern about leaks/breaks. The by-pass filter supposedly filters about 10% at a time which is quite often over the course of a 1000 miles. Please understand that I'm not trying to be argumentative. The reason for my post is that the current filter has the input on the side -- about half way up and the return on the bottom. The filter I'm considering has both input/output connections at the top. I'm wondering if could be a potential problem. Thanks

I'd say that even if the filtering capability is no better than the original type at least you do away with some of the mess involved when it comes time to change it. I also have to believe that 10% of the oil being filtered is better than none at all.
