Has anyone out there had this problem? Started up my rebuilt 250 and the new reman starter is not disengaging, makes a horrible noise. It is the front 3-bolt type of starter. Can these type of starters be shimmed or is there another fix for this. Where can I get shims for this type of starter? Thanx in advance Dano I really want to drive my truck again, after it has been sitting in the garage for a year. If it's not one thing its another.

It sounds like the return spring on the starter solenoid is not releasing the pinion from the flywheel starter ring. It could be after sitting unused for so long that the solenoid piston is corroded and needs to be cleaned. I would pull the starter and check before attempting to start your 250 again. You should not need any shims.

Dear Dan;
That should work. You could try it off the car too, after the cleaning etc.
That type of starter doesn't use shims.
Good luck, John M........
