Inliners International Forums General Discussion Drive Train 4 speed transmission

I'm looking for advice on putting a 4-speed manual transmission behind the 292 I'm swapping into my '54 First series pickup. The current transmission is the original (I think) with a compound low gear. I want to drive this truck at current freeway speeds. I've been told an S-10 trans. will work and maybe something out of an older Camaro. An thoughts on this would be appreciated.

To start with click on the Tech Tips link at the left of this page and go to the T-5 page. I am presently running an s-10 t-5 behind a 270 GMC in my '53 pickup. It goes as fast as I want to drive it. 70-75 all day with 17 mpg. Rear gears are 3.54s.
