Sleepy:
I don't remember any problems with running a blocked EGR port on that 9635 on a BBC 454, but that was the engine that caught fire in the carburator after putting deisel fuel in the gastank by mistake. The carb backfired, the oil- saturated k&n filter got on fire, there was no safety switch on the electric fuel pump, so it kept pumping and the fire got bigger and melted thru the plastic fuel filter under the air cleaner. Things could've gotten worse, but some quick-thinking hands grabbed fire bottles and put it out. Towed it home and it's been sitting, awaiting a total rebuild ['67 Chevy 4WD Suburban] since 1998. Surprizingly, the AFB survived and with a little scouring to get the flame retardant off the exterior and a fresh carb kit, it should rebuild OK.
I doubt that blocking the EGR port was contributory, though.
Carter marine carbs had a gas vent in the same place. Not sure what an EGR does, but I think it stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Some '70s era environmental tinkering, possibly?
I run a Carter 9606 600 CFM AFB on the 350 V8 in my '71 Jimmy, and an Ed$elbrock 1404 500 CFM on the 292 L6 in my '68 Chevy stepside. I also have a Carter AVS that was once a discarded movie prop -- it looks promising. The AVS also has that side 3/8" inlet.
