Hi All;

New guy.... 2nd post...no my first wasn't a question \:\)

I'll try to keep a long storey short...

I'm going to transplant a Chevy inline 6 into my imported British 4 cyl Land Rover...

I have a 250 cid here, block number 473483 and it has a 14" dia flywheel and an 11" clutch also a 3 bolt starter....... It is an 1984 with the 2bbl carb....

anyway the flywheel is too large to accept my Scotty's adaptor....Chevy 6 to Land Rover tranny....

I need a smaller flywheel.... I understand there is a 153 tooth 12 and 3/4" dia flywheel that takes a 10" clutch plate....

I wonder can i put a smaller flywheel on this engine? I presume i will need a different starter as well....

Second part of question..I wonder just which engines have the 153 tooth flywheel.....

I have another engine available to me, its an 1977... #377127, single barrel carb with a 3 speed manual gearbox hooked to it and it has a two bolt starter, I cannot access it yet... but was wondering if this engine may have a smaller flywheel since it has a 2 bolt starter or is there any relation there?

Thanks....

Best Regards;
Dave

yes you can install the 153 tooth flywheel. The only thing you have to change on the starter is the front nose cone. The aluminium piece. You will need to find the one that has the mounting bolts both going on the very back part of the engine. Although the 3 bolt one may already have the pattern. All it does is space the starter in further. The other engine might have the smaller flywheel. I know that the earlier ones did like up to at least 1970. You can also get the flywheel from a small block chevy too.

A tip I learned the HARD way concerning starters. It seems inconsequential until one is lying on his back trying to work a wrung off starter bolt out of the block. There are two different mounts from the top of the starter to the block. One is a solid cast 90 degree ell and the other is a long twisted bracket. The ell is screwed into the block and into the top of the starter housing. The bracket mounts to the starter HOUSING bolt at the front top of the starter and up to the lifter cover on the block. Use one or the other; depends on the starter housing. Some are tapped for the ell and some are not. The bracket will work on any of them as far as I know. I have both mounted on my block so they don't get lost. I am using the bracket since the starter does not accept the ell in this instance. Also, the starter mounting bolts available on the "HELP" rack at the parts house and the genuine articles are not created equally. Use factory bolts if you can. Ray

The easy way with the starter, if you have the funds, is buy a mini-starter from any local speed shop or mail order such as Jegs or Summit. You can also buy the 153 tooth flywheels aftermarket. Any flywheel off any 62-67 Chevy II is a 153 if you are looking for a donor vehicle.
