On sqare bore carbs the primaries are the same size as the secondaries. On a spread bore the primaries are bigger. Guys like edelbrock sell adapters to put either type of carb on either type of manifold:


The Rochester Quadra-jet is a spread bore - the Holley 650 double pumper is a square bore . . .
