There is a method of drilling and countersinking bolts into the balancer to keep the outer shell from walking off the inner hub. I've had to do it on almost every engine that I've built that was not COMPLETELY stock. Maybe it's my modifications, maybe something else is at work. Nonetheless, I learned the trick from others that were fighting the same battle with highly modified 292's and 250's on roundy-round tracks. Besides, the race rules require a method to retain the ring, and this works.
If anybody's interested in what can be done to fix the "walk", then let me know and I'll see if I can get some closeup photos of the one on my truck now.
