You can unscrew the plug in the bottom of the tank and see if setiment comes out as it drains. I would do this with only a gallon of fuel in the tank and in a well ventilated area with NO sources of heat or spark nearby. The best as has been suggested is to remove the tank. It's really not that hard especially if you have a manual to follow.
