yes/no: The safest way to store a crankshaft is standing up in order to prevent warpage along the length?

I'm pulling a crank, probably for a year or more from a motor and don't want to damage it in storage. I think I recall standing it up and good coat of oil will be all it needs.

Thanks all!

Dear Greg;

If It's a stock one (yet to be machined) just do it that way.

Some Machine Shops like to store (fancy ones) under the bench (suspended) verticaly between two 'channel iron' sections, from the 'flywheel' end.

I've just put a 2" X 6" block under mine & stored verticaly tieing them to the wall in case of earthquakes.

I guess the main theme is to NOT lay them on a concrete flore and prevent rust.

Good luck. \:\)

I have a least a dozen stored all on the flange end.Make sure it cannot fall down (important in earthquake country). Wire it to a post if nothing else. I like to oil them with M/C chain lube or wire rope lube. Both come in spray cans. I also place each in a plastic bag and tape the end. I punch a couple of holes in the bag to eliminate condensation which not been a problem.

Race machine shops and assembly shops store them upside down as above described. There's nothing like going into Fontana's, Shaver's, or Velasco's and seeing a line of ready to install cranks. Good Luck
