I've got a 194 head on my 292 and am told that it would be better with the right head, why? The 194 would have more compression. So if I swap heads wouldn't it make sense to shave alittle off the 292 head.

The 292 cylinder head is really not any better than a 194 cyl head..Stock for stock.
Don't listen to that advice.

You would not be able to shave a 230,250,292(all the same,,,BTW) cyl head to match the same volume as the 194 cyl head.

Even if you could,,, the 230,250,292 head would be too thin.

So,, do not swap heads.

if using bigger valve's then the 292 head is the better choice. when putting 1.90-2.02 valves into a 194 head the are shrouded alot more than a 292. tom

The 194 can Be made to flow. It just takes a little more in the Unshrouding Department,(depending on teh valve that has been installed.)
And to gain the same compression (that of the 194 head) you would have to change the pistons.
If one was looking for a easy 10,11-1 or more. compression. It is very easy to get with the 194 head. And I have heard you even net closer to 12-1 plus. With useing a Flat top piston. If a pop-up was to be used You would surely be looking at well over 13-1.
hope this helps.

You have to consider the source of the info. Often it comes from someone who has never done a thing with an inline. As an example they have amassed enough "knowledge" from reading all the magazines that you wouldn't use a 265 Chevy head on a 350 so they apply the same thinking to everything. After a while you just listen and laugh and walk away.
