The efi cylinder head is more prone to crack. The carb cylinder head is better for all out flow. The efi head is better for low end grunt. Are there better years? All depends, they all made about the same HP/TQ from the factory, with a little more from the efi models, Carb'd engine is a little easier to make more power.
Why have you heard only good things about the ford 300 engine? 1. It makes great low end torque. 2. It lasts forever, why? Because its underpowered from the factory, kinda like the big block ford engines. Why did the 230 feel like a screamer? Because it probably doesnt peak at such a low rpm like the ford 300, the ford engine is about low end grunt, nothing more, bet the 300 makes alot more torque.
Did Ford use them in 3/4 ton 4x4 pickups?
Yes
For fuel mileage would they be a better choice than an 8?
No
