Just bought a beater 78 camaro that has a tired 250 in it. (burns oil and water and has excessive blowby)
What im wondering is for the price of rebuilding the engine myself (wont know exactly to what extent till inside it) and trying to find some decent priced intake manifold (not stock) and headers, cant i put a 350 in it instead and be further ahead of the game?
Im not looking to set it up for racing, just a stock rig with better performance/ mileage than stock without my wallet groaning so much.

go for it, I just ran into the samething. Looked all over, called 20 some junk yards. only two had a 250, one wanted $700 for a used motor the other wanted $450. One guy told me they were getting hard to come by. I figure for the camero, go with a v-8. Next time you need parts or what ever, you can find em. Good Luck

Welllll........no you wouldn't be "ahead of the game" A crate 350 engine is 1500.00 stock. a short block 700.00 stock. Then both options are going to nickel and dime you to death. You have already said that you dont want a race car just a daily driver so it is going to boil down to the money and time that you have to spend.......for the money stay with the 250

I think the L6 is a more bullet proof solution. I have 2 '62 cars... 1 with a 235 and the other with a 230. The 235 best I can tell.... has not ever had any major engine work. As deep as I have ever been is changing the lifters.... which is only removing the side cover and valve cover. She leaks a little... but A#1 on dependibility.

My 230 sat for 10 years in a garage before I got it. I put some oil the cyl's 1st. I rebuilt the carb/tank and new fuel line... put in some gas and fired it up!

Being ahead of the game would not involve buying a crate motor for sure, thats why i mentioned rebuilding myself.............

I think the reason everyone is so pensive on their answers is the application. It is strange for someone to ask about saving a 6 cylinder in a 78 Camero. The cheapest solution is to drop a v8 in. Period. Anyone can do it, it is easy. The road less traveled it to use the inline 6 cylinder with this car...not many do it, takes a special person, the odd duck, the guy who is secure enough in themselves to do things that not everyone else does and to be sucessful at it. Go ahead, dare to make a move outside the norm...stay with the six and be different! Or don't.....jb

And if you are thinking any kind of mileage, there is no comparison. When my '40 first went on the road, I put a good used 250 from a '69 pickup in it with single exhaust, 2.56 gears with a 4 speed and a rebuilt monojet carb. Took the car to the Inliners meet in Columbus '84 with Patrick Dykes. It was nice to get better than 30 MPG!!! Dare To Be Different

Dear Rob;

Why not put in a 292" & have the best of both worlds. More HP & torque than a 283" V-8. Look it up.

Good luck, John M., #3370.
