Hi, I have a 1970 Ford Maverick with a I6 200 C-4 trans. I would like to change the stock 2.79:1 rear diff to something else, has anyone else changed the rear diff on one of these, I occastionally go on the interstate at 75 so it cant be revving to high at 75.

Thanks,
RudyD

you should have the 8in and not a 9 in the 9in rear end came in mostly the bigger car But gears still change out the same way out the front. I have a 9in in my 64 chevy2 and have had gears changed a few times I did the first set myself Not that hard to do as long as you have the right tools to do it. Hope this helps. }[oooooo]

V8 MAVERICKS CAME WITH 3.00 8". 3.25 WAS OPTIONAL, AND ALSO ON A/C CARS. BRONCOS USED 3.50 AND HIGHER.

Gear choices are all compromise. in this area you cant have your cake and eat it too.
A good gear for a street performance car is 3.55 because its enough change to increase performance yet still be a cruiser on the interstate. wheel size affects the overall ratio as well so it must be figured in when picking a gear size. There are calculators on the internet to figure out what your rpm will be with what size tires/gear ratio/mph.
but to give you an idea 3.55 gears with P205/14 tires will run right at 3000 rpm at 60mph, I suspect thats about the size tires on your Maverick. there are not many gear options for your differential, but you can play with the tire size and fudge your rpm range up or down quite a bit. good luck with your project.

I swapped in an 8" (5lug) rear end from a 74 (250cid) Mav, into my 70 Mav. Bolted right up, 2.79 gear, but a lot stronger than the 7 1/4" stock rear. It's the same as the V8 version.
Good luck,
Steve
