I have a 67 c-10 w/stock 292 4 speed w/granny, I have 255 60 X 15 tires on the rear, at 70 miles per hour I,m at about 3,000 rpm's (sounds to high), my current rearend is 3.73:1. I'm thinking of putting 3.08:1 for the highway (already bought parts), I also plan on installing a th350 automatic in the near future, any Ideas or thought's
Thanks

I'm going to be running my stock 3.73s behind a mildly built 292 once I get everything put together. But my transmission will compensate on the highway with overdrive (0.73).
A 3.08 will work nicely for cruising. You will lose pulling and towing capabilities but if those don't matter, go for it!

As was said you will lose a lot of towing and hill pulling power, but cruising and highway milage on the flats will be great. I have 3.08s in my 84 chevy c-10 with a 305 and 700-R4 overdrive and it gets pretty good milage for a v8. Actually does fine in hills too, and handles weight well as long as it is in the vehicle and not towed behind it. I run 31x10.5" on it. A better idea in my opnion would be a 700-R4 swap, as it will allow you to have the best of both worlds. For the record if I keep my truck Im installing a 3.73 ratio with a limited slip differential. Milage will drop a lil bit but acclleration and towing, and weight capabilities will be more than enough reward. Good luck and have fun--ybi

Lloyd, I have a 235 Chevy PU, with saddle type tool boxes that replace the fenders, like a utility truck with low boxes, (heavy not counting the truck itself), a 3.08 rear end, 295 50R 15 rubber. Your tires maybe taller than mine, but I can tell you that my small 235 pulls hills with no problem and a trailer just fine, not sure about a trailer and pulling a hill, small trailer OK. I do have a .73 OD, this pulling a trailer would not be advised until you reach higher RPMs, at least for my weaky. The 292 produces much more torque and should be no problem. I will say that if it was my truck I would go to the 700-R4 OD tranny and keep my 3.73. This will give you better low end and ecomomy both city and freeway. Have fun Luis

I'd vote for the 700r4 also and leave the rear as is. You can also use the lockup convertor with out a lot of hassle. Put in a switch which you manually flip after reaching cruise speed to lock up convertor, supply power thru a relay that will kick out when you touch the brake. Not quite heaven but worth it for the mileage.
