Did you try shifting it before it was installed?
Did you try turning tailshaft and then shifting?
Just to hazard a guess, but maybe they didn't re-assemble the "control selector arm" correctly. This is one of the parts that mounts to the top cover plate and works with the shift forks. Look at the expaned parts view in a shop manual for reference.
